MARSHALL, MN -- Winona State University opened its play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament with a 6-1 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead and a 4-2 victory over Wayne State College, NE to put itself into the unbeaten bracket of the tournament.
WSU came up with only four hits, but a four-run first inning proved to be the difference in the win over the MSUM Dragons. Mollie Bjelland had the crucial hit in the Warriors' first inning, coming up with a bases-loaded double after the first three Warriors walked to load the bases.
Kristen Fossell went the distance on the mound for the Warriors, tossing a three-hitter with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
In the Warriors' second game, WSU came up with four runs in the last of the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit. The Warriors scored all their runs with two outs, as Terra Halron had a run-scoring double, Amanda Wilhelm came up with a run-tieing single and Jenny Wilmes came up with a two-run single to put WSU in the lead for good.
