EMPORIA, KS -- Winona State University could come up with only one hit and fell 2-0 to Emporia State University, KS in the championship semifinal round of the NCAA Division II North Central Region held on Turnball Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Emporia State remained unbeaten in the tournament, while WSU needs to come back through the loser's bracket in order to advance on to next week's Division II National Championship in Houston, TX.
No. 6-nationally ranked ESU (43-15) came up with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the only runs in the game, while Annie Stuedemann lifted a ball to leftfield to lead off the top of the seventh for the only WSU (37-14) hit.
No. 6 Seed WSU did have opportunities to score, putting runs at second and first with one out in the second and then loading the bases with one out in the fourth. But each time the Warriors failed to come up with the key hit.
Kristen Fossell turned in a solid pitching performance for the Warriors. Fossell gave up five hits and did not allow a base on balls, while striking out five.
