Warriors Add Three To 2008-09 Squad

WINONA, MN -- Winona State University head softball coach Greg Jones has announced the signing of two players to national letters of intent and the transferring of another player for the 2008-2009 season.

Signed were Katie Moriarty (outfield/2nd base) from Jordan, MN and Kathy Crudo (Catcher/Infielder) from Stacy, MN, while transferring is, junior, first baseman, Kayla Lewis of Bettendorf, IA.

“We are extremely excited to have the caliber of these players join the Winona State softball family,” said Jones of his latest additions to WSU.

Both Moriarty and Crudo received All-State recognition while playing prep softball at Jordan High School and Forest Lake High School respectively. Moriarty hit .614 had stole 29 bases in 31 attempts. Crudo batted .455 with a .630 slugging percentage and two home runs.

While at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA, Lewis batted .355 with 29 doubles and 68 runs batted in over a two-year period.

Here are comments by Coach Jones on the three players scheduled to put on the Warrior uniform:

Kathy Crudo -- “One of Kathy’s many gifts is her tremendous athleticism and ability to play anywhere on the field. Kathy has all the tools and the offensive prowess to make an immediate impact at Winona State. We look forward to Kathy putting on the Warrior uniform and playing a major role in the future success of Warrior softball.”

Katie Moriarty -- “Katie’s speed will make an immediate impact in our lineup, and her ability to play both in the outfield and on the infield will help provide us the athleticism we are looking for. Katie plays the game hard and with a great passion. She will be a vital ingredient to the future success of our team.”

Kayla Lewis -- “Kayla is a tremendous leader who has the ability to make everyone around her better. Furthermore, she is a very accomplished hitter who truly understands what it takes to be a great hitter at this level. Kayla’s maturity as a player and championship drive will make her an immediate asset to our program.”

Winona State is a NCAA Division II university and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Warriors were 38-21 overall in 2008; placed second in the NCAA North Central Region Tournament; won the NSIC Tournament and was second in the NSIC regular season.
