Warriors Capture Season Opening Thrillers

Kim Nemcek ALAMOSA, CO -- Winona State University opened its season with a a couple of thrilling wins, including a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the host Adams State College at the Best Western Alamosa Inn/Grizzly Volleyball Classic.

Kim Nemcek came up with three kills in the Warriors 15-13 win over Adams State in the fifth game of the match. WSU lost the first two games by identical counts of 30-26, but then came back for wins of 30-28, 30-26 in the next two games.

In the fifth game, WSU took the lead with a kill by Nemcek. The Warriors then would lead by as much as 13-8 only to have the Grizzlies to close the match at 14-13. WSU then capitalized on a service error by ASC for the winning point.

Jenna Padely added two kills in the fifth game, while Kiersten, Carmen Stankowski and Kelsey Penebaker all came up with kills. ASC hurt itself with three service errors and attack errors and one ball handling error.

Nemcek and Padley each had 15 kills for the match, while Stankowski finished with 14 and Arendt totaled 11.

Freshman Susan Clausen accounted for 50 assists, while Rudi Balich had 17 digs. Crystal Otte and Stankowski added 16 and 13 digs respectively. Padley added to the WSU defensive output with seven total blocks.

In the Warriors' first match of the tournament they came up with a convincing 3-1 win over Grand Canyon University, AZ.

WSU won the first two games, 30-23 and 30-22, before Grand Canyon hit the board with a 30-26 win in Game Three. From there the Warriors fought off GCU in Game Four for a close, 31-29, victory.

Stankowski led the Warriors with 19 kills. Padely followed with 16 and Kerry Daly totaled 11.

Clausen recorded 48 assists, while Balich posted 20 digs.

Daly and Arendt also came up with four total blocks each.
