Warriors Shock No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State

Story by: Winona State Sports Informaiton Office

Rudi Balich MARSHALL, MN -- Winona State University pulled off one of the biggest upsets in its volleyball history with a 3-2 win over No. 4-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University.

The Warriors rallied from a two-games-to-none deficit to win the final three games, including Game Five by a 15-10 score. SMSU won the first two games 30-22 and 30-18, but WSU came back to win Game Three 30-24 and, then in a very crucial Game Four, held on for a 30-28 win.

It was a very balanced attack for the Warriors, as Rudi Balich and Kim Nemcek each had 11 kills, while Kelsey Penebaker recorded 10 kills. Lisa Dobie helped direct that offense with 42 assists.

Defensively Balich came up with 16 digs.

Southwest Minnesota State moved up in the national rankings by knocking off, then No. 3, Concordia University St. Paul and snapping the Golden Bears' 69-match NSIC winning streak.
