WSU Defensive Stand Leads To Victory

WINONA, MN -- Winona State University held the University of Nebraska at Kearney scoreless for over nine and a half minutes and scored 31 unanswered points in heading to a 92-62 nonconference win at McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors trailed 14-5 at the 14:08 mark of the first half, but that is when things turned completely around for WSU and the Warriors would go on to score 31 straight points for a 36-14 lead with 6:20 left in the opening period. UNK eventually scored a free throw and WSU then recorded is biggest lead of the half with a, 39-15, 24-point, lead at 3:40. That completed a 34-1 record over a 10:18 period.
The first half finished with WSU leading 45-21 and the Warriors would go on to outscore the Lopers 47-41 in the second half.
In that first-half run, Kelsey Homewood led the charge with 11 points. while Jenny Steffen came up with eight, Ana Wurtz netted six and Bonnie Bjorke and Natalie Gigler scored four and two points respectively.
For the game Steffen finished with 20 points, Homewood tallied 19 and Wurtz and Gigler each scored ten.
Shooting proved to be the difference in the game, a the Warriors shot 58.9 percent from the field (33-6), 57.9 (11-19) from three-point range and 93.8 from the free throw line by converting 15 of 16 attempts.
UNK came into the game with a 9-2 record and on the tails of a win over No. 4-ranked Alaska-Anchorage, which came into that game with a 10-0 record.
