Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
FAYETTE, IA -- Winona State University set a single-season wins record for its program with a 74-54 win over Upper Iowa University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
The Warriors had won 16 games in a season in two previous seasons, but finally cracked the record mark with a 10-0 run late in the second half to outscore the Peacocks 34-25 in the final 20 minutes of play and secured the win.
The 17 wins is part of the 15 WSU seasons that has reached double-digit victories.
The win also assures the Warriors of having only their third back-back winning seasons in the program's history.
The Warriors built a 39-30 lead at halftime only to have the Peacocks cut the deficit to six points, 49-43, with 12:56. From there WSU scored ten unanswered points and held UIU scoreless for five minutes and 33 seconds for a 59-43 lead with 7:52 to play. WSU then outscored UIU 15-9.
WSU finished with a balanced scoring attack with five players finishing in double figures. Amanda Reimer led the starters with 15 points, Ana Wurtz connected for 12 and Molly Anderson came up with 10. The Warrior bench outscored the UIU counterparts 35-16 with Kelsey Homewood netting 14 and Natalie Gigler scoring 13 of those 35 points.
