Vail Named New Head Coach
Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
WINONA, MN -- Winona State University has announced the hiring of Erika (Ochs) Vail as the new Warrior women's golf head coach.
Vail (Forest Lake, MN), a former varsity golfer at Winona State, takes over from Dr. Robert Newberry, who guided the Warriors for nine years.
While a varsity player at Winona State, Vail turned in an outstanding career. In her four varsity years Vail never placed out of the top ten of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. She was tenth in her freshman year and then went on to take runnerup honors twice and was the NSIC medalist in 2000. Those efforts earned her All-Conference honors three times and NSIC Player of the Year honors in 2000. As a sophomore Vail qualified for the NCAA Division II national championship in 1999 and went on to finish in a tie for 15th place.
After her collegiate career was over Vail was the women's assistant golf coach for two seasons.
During his tenure as the Warrior women's head coach, Newberry led the WSU to two NSIC championships and was named NSIC Coach of the Year three times.
Newberry will continue to be the WSU men's varsity head coach and will assist with the women's squad.
