Exercise and Rehabilitative Science : Athletic Training Major
The Exercise and Rehabilitative Science: Athletic Training Major is a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Programs (CAATE) nationally accredited program. In addition to the academic coursework requirements, students are required to complete clinical education experience and fieldwork experiences (as assigned by the Athletic Training Program Director). Following completion of the clinical education and academic requirements of the major, a student will be eligible for national certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
Students interested in the Exercise and Rehabilitative Science: Athletic Training Major must apply to the program, participate in a competitive selection process, and adhere to published retention guidelines.
Winona State University has a long-standing tradition of graduates that become certified athletic trainers and positively contribute to the allied health profession of athletic training. Graduates have secured positions with professional teams, semi-professional teams, Olympic teams, as University Head Athletic Trainers, as Athletic Training Clinical Directors, and as Clinic-High School athletic trainers.
Athletic Training Student Program
Following successful completion of the application process, students must acquire clinical experiences over a minimum of two calendar years as assigned by the Program Director. These experiences will be on a rotation as described in the WSU Athletic Training Handbook and be acquired at a variety of settings that include experiences with upper extremity intensive sports, lower extremity intensive sports, equipment intensive sports, and general medical rotations. These experiences will be under the direct supervision of several different Approved Clinical Instructors (ACI's) and other types of health care providers. However, the majority of the student's clinical experiences will be at WSU in a traditional athletic training setting.
Athletic Training Majors at Wi nona State University build on the foundation courses of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, nutrition and mechanical kinesiology with specific athletic training education courses. These courses expose the student to CAATE competencies and proficiencies in injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Clinical sites include the athletic training facilities at WSU, Saint Mary’s University, Wi nona Senior High School , and other area high shcools. Students also gain valuable community based medical experience at Southeast Minnesota Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery Specialists, Sport & Spine Physical Therapy clinic, Rushford Medical Clinic, Wi nona Area Ambulance Service, and Community Memorial Hospital's Physical Therapy Department, Emergency Department and Surgery Department.

Students obtain clinical education experiences with football, hockey, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, and wrestling. Students have many opportunities to travel with teams under the direct supervision of an ACI, attend NCAA Division II post-season competitions, attend orthopedic surgeries, and learn from our team physician on campus and at the clinic or hospital.
