Application and Selection Information
A student that is interested in the Athletic Training Major should meet with the Director of Athletic Training Education and enroll in HERS 191 Introduction to Athletic Training, BIO 211 and 212 during their first year at WSU. Students will need to demonstrate commitment to clinical learning experiences. Enroll in HERS 292 & 314 in the fall semester of application.
Completed applications will be DUE in November of each year.
Application Ranking and Selection
Student applications to the ATEP will be rated using the ATEP Application Rubric as Exceptional, Above Average, or Meets Minimum, and ranked by the Selection Committee. Each year, the Committee will curve the application scores. Cumulative Scores that rank in the Exceptional to Above Average category may be admitted directly to the ATEP. Student applications that receive scores that Meet Minimum to Average will be offered an Interview with the Selection Committee. Interview Scores will be added to the Application Scores and students will be admitted based upon available space in the ATEP.
Special Admission
If space is available, a special admission may be held during the summer. Students that have met ALL academic and clinical learning outcomes should notify the Director of Athletic Training Education of his/her desire for special admission. Applications and interviews will be DUE during the last week of July (dates and requirements will be posted and emailed to all majors). Students that are admitted during the summer will be expected to participate in all in-service and clinical education opportunities available in August. When the academic year begins, students will join the previous year's sophomore class to progress through the ATEP.

Each Applicant must submit the following information with their applications:
University Transcripts (20 Points - 10 Points for Overall GPA & 10 Points for Major GPA)
Documentation of course grades should be sent from the following institutions or agencies to the Athletic Training Education Program Director.
- Winona State University Transcripts: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75. Students must have completed HERS 191, HERS 235, BIO 211, BIO 212 and be enrolled and progressing appropriately (Mid Semester Form) in HERS 292, HERS 314. Students will need a 2.75 GPA or better in the major to be considered. All other Exercise and Rehabilitative Science and Biology courses will also be evaluated independently from the overall GPA.
- Transfer students must provide official transcripts from all other institutions attended. Transfer students MUST take HERS 191 at WSU and participate in all application and selection procedures at WSU. Transfer students must meet all university guidelines given in the catalog for transfer students and MUST take HERS 292, 293, 362, 365, 389, 391, 392, 393, 489, 491, 492, 494, and 495 at WSU.

Winona State University Observation Hours and Reflective Journal (10 Points)
Each student will complete observation hours in the WSU Athletic Training Room as required for HERS 191. Each student will compile a typed journal (Reflective Journal) documenting dates, times of field experiences, sequence of events, elaboration of significant experiences, and an analysis of the experiences. Students will be given the opportunity to continue their observation hours throughout the first year for a total of no more than 70 hours per year. Students will continue their Reflective Journal in HERS 292.

Letters of Recommendation (20 Points)
Each student is required to provide a total of five letters of recommendation. Two of these letters will be from a Senior Athletic Training Student reflecting your daily interaction in the athletic training room. THREE of these letters will be PROFESSIONAL letters of recommendation. These letters should be from professionals in the medical, health or allied health field that you have worked directly with through observation hours and can reflect your potential to succeed in an allied health profession. These professional letters may also be from professors or instructors reflecting your academic success and potential. Finally, these letters may be from employers reflecting your maturity, interpersonal skills and other qualities of a successful allied health care professional. Each reference should complete the recommendation letter form as well as write a letter of recommendation.

Cover Letter and Resume (10 Points)
The completed application should include a single spaced essay or cover letter stating what the student’s qualifications are to be part of the program, why the student wishes to become an athletic trainer, and a summarization of what the student can add to the program. A simple one page Resume should also be included.

Other materials that must be including in application packet
- Proof of First Aid and CPR Certification - Copy of cards (front and back)
- Completed Medical Physical - forms are available in ME 139 and also from the Program Director or Clinical Coordinator of ATEP (PLEASE NOTE: The ATEP forms are NOT the same as athletic physical forms)
- Completed Technical Stadards form
- Hepatitis B Vaccinations as noted on physical form or a signed declination form
All of the materials listed above should be professionally presented in a soft covered portfolio. NO hard cover or three ring binders PLEASE! Each application will be kept on file in the ATEP Program Director's office.

Students selected for interview will be expected to dress and act professionally for the interview. Following all interviews the Selection Committee will meet and discuss the remaining applicants and selection letters will be sent/emailed soon thereafter.
