Clinical Education Guidelines for Athletic Training Students

The following guidelines delineate the role of an athletic training student. As an undergraduate student in the Athletic Training Education Program at the Winona State University , you are expected to conduct yourself in accordance with these guidelines during any clinical experience (on- or off-campus).

•  Definitions

•  Direct Supervision

•  Direct Supervision is defined as the constant visual and auditory interaction between athletic training student and certified athletic trainer (or Approved Clinical Instructor/ACI). Therefore, the ACI is available on location to physically intervene in an emergency or educational experience.

•  Clinical Supervision

•  Supervision is defined as a clinical experience that involves daily visual and auditory interaction between the athletic training student and a non-certified athletic trainer (e.g., physician, physical therapist, EMT, nurse).

•  The supervisor is available to plan, direct, and advise the students’ clinical experience.

•  Unsupervised

•  Any clinical experience in which the athletic training student is acting without the physical presence of a certified athletic trainer or clinical supervisor; thus making it impossible to intervene immediately. (See First Responder below)

•  Athletic Training Student Credential Requirements

•  Each athletic training student must maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR in order to provide any allowable services of an athletic training student regardless of the presence of a supervising certified athletic trainer.

•  After the sophomore year, students are expected to have and maintain First Responder Certification.

•  Each athletic training student is required to enroll in HHP 362 each semester. This enrollment provides liability insurance for each student for the semester.

•  Supervised Clinical Experiences

•  Acceptable Services

An athletic training student acting under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer may:

•  Provide all athletic training services that have been presented within a previous or concurrent academic course and/or successfully evaluated and recorded (assessment website) by an ACI.

•  Complete Injury Report forms and record progress notes.

•  First Responder - Unsupervised Clinical Experiences

•  Acceptable Services

The role of an athletic training student acting without the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer is limited to following:

•  Application of all first-aid skills for the treatment of acute injuries including:

•  RICE

•  Blister or wound care

•  Wrapping

•  Use of elastic wraps to prevent injury and control swelling.

•  Application of all CPR related skills.

•  Provide assistance to the athlete with the application of a stretching program, but may not establish a new plan.

•  Application of tape to prevent an injury and support an existing injury.

•  Application of a brace already being used.

•  Application of splints for stabilization of an acute injury or for the protection of an existing injury provided that the splint has been previously applied to the athlete for the same injury.

•  Conduct a history evaluation to determine the need for referral.

•  Conduct a brief injury assessment to determine the need for splinting, bracing, or crutch use for safe referral.

•  Application of ice per protocols.

•  Application of a hot pack per protocols.

•  Write progress notes to record actions of care.

•  Refer injured athlete to appropriate medical help or facility.

•  Unacceptable Services

•  An athletic training student may not provide any service that is not identified in section III.A of this document without prior written/verbal instruction, consent, and/or guidance by the supervising certified athletic trainer. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

•  Initiate, change, or progress a rehabilitation plan

•  Use electrical or sound modalities

•  Conduct a full, new evaluation of an injury

•  Making return-to-play decision

•  Without supervision, performance expectations and restrictions of the student can be compared to those of a coach traveling with the team unaccompanied by an ATC. It is the responsibility of the institution that places the student in a First Responder position to understand and accept the litigious risk involved. In these instances the institution must provide an appropriate position description with required qualifications for the first responder.
