| Online Articulation Programs Minnesota’s secondary schools have suffered a critical shortage of licensed business education teachers. At the present time, this shortage is expected to increase. Moreover, there is limited access to necessary courses for interested candidates to become licensed because Winona State University (WSU) is the only MnSCU institution that offers an undergraduate business education licensure program. To improve the opportunity and access for interested candidates for completing a business education program and receiving licensure, WSU has worked closely with the Board of Teaching (BOT) and MN Department of Education (MDE; formerly Children, Families, and Learning) including the Career and Technical Education Division of the MDE and Program Approval Unit from the Licensure Division of the MDE to develop a collaborative procedure for students located throughout the state to complete a business education program. Since fall 1999, WSU has worked toward preparing online courses. This included a pilot cohort of students from the Mankato area. The program is now ready to be released statewide. Students in this program complete their general education core and certain electives from the MnSCU institution in their area. The MN Standards of Effective Practice must be taken from a single BOT approved teacher preparation institution and verification of satisfactory completion provided. The business education core of courses is completed online through WSU. Through careful collaboration and accepted course credit transfer agreement, we are able to serve students throughout the state and fulfill the need for licensed secondary business teachers. Moreover, students can obtain a Master of Arts in Teaching and obtain business education certification through a program at Minnesota State University, Mankato combined with Winona State University's online courses. |
