Training and Development

The Training and Development Minor prepares individuals for professional positions in employer-based training and employee development programs. Our T&D minor augments many majors. Additionally, it prepares students to fulfill the rapidly expanding training and training administrator market. As one of the most rapidly growing career opportunity areas, the T&D field offers careers in positions such as: trainer/instructor, instructional technologist, course developer/designer, training specialist, and training manager.

The T&D minor furnishes alternative career opportunities for students in numerous majors and disciplines. While a student develops subject matter expertise through a major program of study, this minor develops the knowledge and skills for facilitating the workplace-based learning of personnel in that major discipline.

The T&D minor includes course work in seven basic areas: business organization & management, instruction & program development, business communications, interpersonal relations, human resources, adult learning, and computers. These competency areas coincide with the competencies recommended by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) for well prepared training professionals.

Students may elect a training internship for valuable work experience. Organizations with training and employee development programs provide internship positions which allow students to actively apply knowledge and skills in a real training environment.

Advanced study is provided in graduate level T&D courses such as 652-Managing Training and development Programs and 653-Current Issues and Trends in training. These courses prepare students and practitioners for advanced level positions in employers' T&D programs.
