What is an Internship?

An internship is a practical experience that allows beginners of an occupation or profession to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom. It lets an individual explore career options and become familiar with a particular work environment by performing common tasks in a typical work setting.  Individuals are able to establish themselves as professionals in their respective fields while being supervised or mentored by a staff member.

An internship can play a tremendous role in an individual’s career development and has the potential to boost a candidate’s application with an employer. Before beginning a search for an internship, first clarify your goals, assess your individual needs and the requirements of your academic department, consider all factors involved with the internship and identify multiple search strategies.

Career Services, the internship coordinator for your academic department, and your academic advisor can assist you.
