Charles Dickens was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity and fame than had any previous author during his lifetime, and he remains popular, having been responsible for some of English literature's most iconic novels and characters.

Past Events from this yearDICKENS READ-A-THONTUESDAY, FEBRUARY The Read-a-thon has been moved to February 8, and it will be held at the Alumni House. Dickens was famous for his reading tours of England and the U.S. Join us on the bicentennial of his birth to read (or listen to) some selected passages from his work. MAGIC LANTERN SHOWTUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 6 PM - SOMSEN AUDITORIUM Travel back in time to the 1890s with the magic lantern show, a precursor to motion pictures and a popular form of entertainment during Dickens' time. The lanterns use colorful glass slides to project images on a full-sized screen. Valentine's stories, animated comedy, and songs are dramatized onscreen by a live showman and singer/pianist. The audience participates in the fun, creating sound effects, and joining in chants and sing-alongs. "It's an incredible experience . . . Don't miss them. They're a living national treasure!"-NPR For adults and children 6+.
FILMSDickens has been very influential in the history of film and filmmakers have been imagining his fiction on screen since the early 20th century. His works are second only to Shakespeare's in terms of number of film adaptations.
