Poster #22 The 1st Annual Midwest Music Fest Open: A Community Disc Golf Tournament 陈大卫 David Chen Faculty Mentor: Lorene Olson Students of Recreation and Tourism are required to complete a “practicum” in which each student completes 100 hours of supervised work in a professional setting. I decided to do my practicum locally with the Park and Recreation Department in Winona. My underlying goal was to develop an innovative program which would bring members of the Winona community together; to achieve this goal, I developed a disc golf tournament. Throughout the course of 5 months, I dealt with multiple phases of planning this event. This included decisions regarding the time and location, budgets, registration processes, timing of individual divisions, funding to purchase custom-stamped discs, and developing a practical animation of the event prior to the tournament. In addition, I enlisted the help of volunteers to help with promotion and implementation of this event. I have collaborated with Winona Park and Recreation, Midwest Music Festival, Pi Sigma Epsilon, and the Winona State University Disc Golf Club. The Midwest Music Fest Open will take place at Winona Earth Day on April 21st, 2012. This tournament welcomes anyone interested in disc golf; professional players and first-time beginners alike have the opportunity to have fun in the sun. There are 6 divisions to choose from: Pro, Advanced, Women, Recreational, Winona State University Employees, and Saint Mary’s University Employees. This event is especially attracting for a number of reasons. For instance, the first 20 registered in each division will receive a custom-stamped disc, each division is playing for cash pay-out with additional prizes valued at $250, and all profits go directly toward course improvements. Although this is the first year of the Midwest Music Fest Open, this event has the potential to carry on and thrive in the years to come. |
