Culturally competent nurses possess skills required to assess and communicate with patients from other cultures. Nurses provide care that focuses on the need and preferences of the patient that are appropriate to their individual cultural beliefs (Calvillo et al., 2009). The authors studied cultural competency in terms two and four BSN nursing students from a small Midwestern university housed on two separate campuses. Students were surveyed using the Clinical Cultural Competency Questionnaire (CCCQ) to measure cultural competence. The survey examined cultural confidence regarding the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to provide care for culturally diverse patients.
