Nursing Students’ Attitudes and Comfort Level in Discussing Illness Effects on Patient Sexuality

Jenna Harrison

Faculty Mentor: Susan Sullivan

The effects of illness on sexuality have long been studied and identified.  It is the nurse’s responsibility to assess this area of health and provide appropriate interventions as a means of providing holistic care. Studies have shown that many practicing nurses are failing to address this responsibility (Saunamaki, Andersson, & Engstrom, 2010; Magnan, Reynolds, & Gavin, 2005). Education has been identified as the solution to this disconnect between beliefs and practices, yet many educational institutions are not providing the sexuality education that nursing students need.  This project was conducted as a means of assessing the preparedness of senior level nursing students at a Midwest university and to provide recommendations to the institution for curricular improvements.
