Synthesis of an A₂ Monomer: Difluorobis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane

The purpose of this research is the synthesis of difluorobis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane (4).  This monomer will be used in the synthesis of partially fluorinated poly(aryl ether)s.  A four step synthesis is in progress, with the net effect being a conversion of the carbonyl in 4,4’-dihydroxybenzophenone to the gem-difluoro derivative 4.
