"Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out”: Musical Influence on the Events and Movements during the 1960’s

Rebecca Johnson

Faculty Mentor: Matthew Lindaman

The 1960’s was a decade of transformation.  Music, and the people who created it, produced an undertone of influence that encouraged a generation of young people to step out of boundaries set up by their parents. My research was collected from books, archived newspaper articles, biographies, and specific songs from this period. Although my research led me to have other results than anticipated, I have concluded that major events and movements occurred, encouraged by music of the time, which changed American history.  I was also able to find that while music was influential on these events, the artists themselves were more powerful on the young generation. The idea that music changed a decade may be far-fetched, however, through my research I have concluded that it did help motivate a generation to make a change.
