Creating a Laboratory Immersion Experience for Middle Level Students

Today, the way students learn is drastically different from even a decade ago. To facilitate an environment where students receive the most from their education, laboratory experiences need to evolve along with the learners taking part in them. By researching the Tangled Bank learning style through text and classroom observation, five laboratory exercises were created. The Story of a Cricket provides an opportunity to view development in a hands-on setting. Competitive Beans demonstrates the importance of finite resources within an environment. The World You Live In: The Bacteria You Share it With opens the learners eyes to the microscopic world. Genetics and Fruit Flies allows for actual genetic manipulation in the classroom. Ecosystems: Pond Water displays the existence of delicate food webs in our world. My research entailed completing each exercise, and searching for possible setbacks in an actual school setting. The revised exercises represent an excellent tool for middle level science teachers.
