This study examined perceptions on different body images.  The hypothesis is that females will find skinny body images most attractive compared to average and athletic body types.  Thirty-one females participated in this within subjects design, each being shown a series of 15 pictures, five skinny, five average, and five athletic.  The pictures consisted of the front view of females wearing two-piece swimsuits with their faces blacked out.  The participants rated each picture on attractiveness on six Likert scales and also decided if they had a skinny, average, athletic, or other body type.  There was a significant result when comparing within subjects effects for attractiveness, F(2, 60)= 65.905, p<0.001, confirming the hypothesis.  There was a main effect when comparing skinny to average and athletic images, but no main effect when comparing average and athletic images.  To enhance this study, the sample should be more representative by including people from other states and individuals out of school.  For future research it would be interesting to analyze athletes vs. non-athletes, males vs. females, and adolescents vs. people in their 20’s and 30’s in this type of study.
