Oral Presentation #E4 Songs in Performance: Selection, Preparation, and History of Repertoire Christina Flaherty Faculty Mentor: Suzanne Draayer To fulfill the requirements of my major, this semester I will perform a half-hour voice recital on March 23, 2012. With the help of my studio instructor, Dr. Suzanne Draayer, I have selected and prepared eleven songs for performance. The first three are Romantic pieces that reflect an underrepresented body of literature from Spain. For the second group, there are three songs in German that exhibit a Romantic fascination with nature, fairy tales, and the supernatural. The Handel aria that I chose is from the Baroque era, and the last four are spirituals from the time of slavery in the United States. This repertoire spans a variety of historical time periods and musical genres. Preparation for such a recital has included memorization, interpretation, and mastery of technique and expression. |
