In an increasingly interdependent world, proficiency in at least one foreign language is essential. In recent years Americans have become even more aware of the need to communicate effectively with those in the non-English speaking world. Studying other languages promotes a greater appreciation for the diversity within American society. Knowing another language is often a key element in maintaining a competitive edge in a variety of career paths such as medicine, law, business, teaching, government and human services, and the travel industry. The Department of Foreign Languages at Winona State University is committed to excellence in preparing students for the marketplace in today's global economy.
