Welcome to the webpage of the College of Liberal Arts at Winona State University. We're delighted that you're interested in learning more about the many fine programs we offer. By clicking on the links to the left you'll have access to the webpages of the 17 departments and programs that make our college so diverse and rich in opportunities.
But before you begin exploring specific programs in detail, I'd like to remind you of the tremendous value and practicality of a general liberal arts education. Given the rapid pace of change today, it is safe to say the world you enter following graduation from a university like WSU will be a very different place than it is today. What's more, you will be a very different person. This makes it essential to possess certain core skills that will remain useful no matter how specific industries evolve or your own life plans change. Among these skills are critical thinking, effective writing, dynamic speaking, and sound teamworking. These are the essence of liberal arts education. By studying the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences you will acquire the abilities needed to pursue a career, as well as a broader perspective you can use to make more informed choices about the role you will play in our world.
Here at Winona State our faculty and staff maximize the potential of the liberal arts by adhering to the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education:
- close student-faculty contact
- cooperation among students
- active learning
- prompt feedback
- time on task
- high expectations
- respect for diverse talents and ways of learning
We hope the links on this page lead to answers to the questions you might have about the exciting things taking place in our college. However, there still is no substitute for visiting our campus and experiencing first-hand that magic that takes place in our classrooms. I speak for all the faculty and staff of the College of Liberal Arts when I say we are eager to meet with you to discuss your ambitions and interests. We are proud of our long tradition of helping students begin to realize their dreams through participation in the wide range of programs we offer.
Sincerely,
Troy Paino, Dean College of Liberal Arts
