Outstanding Spring 2008 Graduates
Albert Teo, BS - Biology: Cell & Molecular; Biochemistry Minor
- Research Project with Dr. Ted Wilson - antioxidant activity due to cranberry juice and fruits
- Research Project with Dr. Kim Bates and Dr. David Essar on the prevalence of Lyme Disease in deer ticks of the southeastern region of Minnesota
- Received a full scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Texas Houston graduate program for Cancer Biology
Matthew Meyer, BS - Chemistry: Option B; Biochemistry Minor
- Research Project with Dr. Jeanne Franz on the effects of water quality on Mayfly populations
- Won second place at the Viterbo University Research Symposium
- Will be attending Graduate school at Iowa State University for Analytical Chemistry
Martha Dufresne, BS - Composite Materials Engineering; Polymer Chemistry Minor
- After her first year at WSU, she worked on gel coat research and development during an internship at Interplastic Corporation.
- Last summer, she worked at Wausaukee Composites where she introduced 5 new parts to the production floor.
- She was part of the WSU Performance Engineering Team that completed our WSU Chariot - and also enjoyed riding the chariot down to Kwik Trip at 2 AM the night before homecoming!!
- Currently considering career options with 3M, Andersen Windows, or HB Fuller
Pallavi Sharma, BS - Computer Science: Option A; Mathematics Minor
- Interned and also worked part time at Fastenal in Winona for two years. Web Developer on the J2EE framework using JSPs and servlets and much more.
- She will be joining Decision Intelligence in Minneapolis as a Java Developer
- She is proud to be chosen as the student commencement speaker for out WSU graduation ceremony
- Her journey at WSU began after traveling half way around the world to become part of a new family here at WSU!
Shelby Frost, BS - Geoscience: Geology Option
- Last summer, she conducted a research experiment using WSU’s flume to observe how groundwater flows through stratified sediment. She presented the results at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting in Denver, CO
- Last summer, she also participated in a geology field camp and produced a published geologic map which will be presented at the Institute of Lake Superior Geology’s annual meeting in May
- This year she completed a research project based in Maine that used petrology to study the tectonic events the rock there had been subjected to. This will also be presented at the next Geological Society of America annual meeting
- Currently, she is applying for an internship this summer and looking ahead to a graduate assistantship and research in petrology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth
Michelle Bridge, BT - Mathematics: Secondary Teaching
- Facilitator at the workshop “Rich Geometry Tasks that Promote Mathematical Thinking” at the Education Minnesota Conference
- Participated in a research project on Chinese Music and designed an engaging presentation for the EBD students at the Green-House School in Winona
- Volunteered with the Miller Mentoring Program at Winona Senior High, tutoring 9th-10th graders who are at risk academically
- On vacation days from college, she goes back to Middleton High School and volunteers in the Developmentally Disabled Classroom.
- She has achieved certifications from the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Program and the College Reading and Learning Association (internationally certified tutor)
Caroline Carr, BA - Mathematics, 2nd Major in Statistics
- Caroline was honored as our college banner carrier in Fall 2007
- Presented results of an application of linear algebra at a Communicating Mathematics conference; Title: Predicting the Long-Term Presence of Genetic Traits
- Co-presented at Illinois Council for Teachers of Mathematics; Title: Developing Probabilistic Reasoning Skills Through Simulation
- Volunteer activities with National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Mission Winona, and the Catholic Newman Center
Morgan Gieseke, BS - Statistics; 2nd Major in Mathematics
- Last summer, she completed a Research Experience for Undergraduates, Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Title: Quantifying Uncertainty in Hepatic Clearance
- Worked on a project for Pfizer; Researched pharmacokinetic background information and Bayesian statistical methods
- Final report (joint with four group members) to Pfizer; Presentation at 2007 SIAM Conference on Mathematics for Industry; Department Seminar
- Volunteer Camp Counselor for Summer festival Camp
- She will attending graduate school at North Carolina State University next fall
Joshua Perry, BS - Physics; 2nd Major in Mathematics
- Research project: A computer simulation of solar system formation
- His Honors Thesis in physics is: "Simulation of an N-Body system interacting via the gravitational force.", or in other words, making a mathematical model to show how solar systems form from a dust clouds.
- He has tutored students and worked as a lab assistant for the department for the last two years.
- During the summer months, he tutored a group of students through a sequence of physics courses and enjoyed watching them evolve in the way they think about physics.
- He is headed for a graduate program in Nuclear Physics at Iowa State University
Marcus Williamson, BS - Clinical Laboratory Science
- Top academic student at the North Dakota clinical experience
- Completing his clinical rotations at Community Memorial Hospital laboratories. This is our first clinical site for the expanded clinical laboratory scientist program with Winona State completing its own accreditation.
- Marcus not only has proven to be a wonderful professional example within this clinical experience, he has set the bench standard very high for all of our following students.
