Winona State University is a member of the nation-wide mentoring system called MentorNet
Originally designed as a method of providing additional encouragement and support for women and minorities in sciences and mathematics fields, the system is open to all emerging young professionals as a way to correspond with and learn from those already experienced in a variety of related career experiences.
Mentors and Mentees are connected through a matching of profiles, with the final choice made by each as to continue in an 8-month, email conversation averaging about 10-15 minutes per week.
Get a Mentor!
Any WSU student majoring in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (including teaching majors) are invited to complete a profile on the MentorNet site and be matched with a mentor from partnering industries or academia.
Currently, industry mentors are particularly available Computer Science/Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. As more industry partners are encouraged to join as mentors, however, that list continues to expand.
New WSU faculty are also invited to complete a profile on the MentorNet site and be matched with a senior faculty member in academia.
Be a Mentor!
All sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (including teaching) professionals from industry and academia are invited to become mentors. This includes current and retired WSU faculty, college alumns, and existing as well as potential partners from industry and academia. You do not need to be part of an organization that is a member of MentorNet to volunteer.
Simply go the the MentorNet site and fill out a profile to be matched with a student (undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral) or a beginning faculty member mentee. What a great way to volunteer and stay connected with students and young professionals in your field!
There is still a great need for faculty e-mentors. At the present time, the MentorNet system has more than 100 proteges waiting for faculty mentors. Please encourage all WSU colleagues in the College of Science & Engineering to sign up as mentors. Being an e-mentor with MentorNet is convenient and can take as little time as 15 minutes per week!
For more information and to sign up go to the MentorNet website.
