The College of Science & Engineering supports student and faculty research, industrial interaction, and community service. To further these goals, the College has established centers, under faculty supervision, which provide unique student employment opportunities in “real-world” research and problem-solving:

  • Southeast Minnesota Analytical Service (SEMAS):  SEMAS, operated by the Chemistry Department, serves local and regional cities, counties, businesses, and corporations that need analytical testing of water, industrial products, and chemicals.  Chemistry majors work year-around in the SEMAS as laboratory technicians and assistants. http://www.winona.edu/chemistry/Semas.htm
  • Composite Materials Technology Center (COMTEC):  COMTEC, managed by the Engineering Department, tests manufactured materials and products for numerous local and regional companies needing quality assurance and specification testing. The center also serves as a working laboratory for instruction and engineering research. http://www.winona.edu/engineering/COMTEC/Overview.htm
  • Large River Studies Center (LRSC):  LRSC, administered through the Biology Department, provides students with the opportunity to conduct research on large river ecosystems and associated bodies of water. LRSC also is responsible for disseminating information about the upper Mississippi River and other large river ecosystems to local, regional, and scientific communities. http://bio.winona.edu/delong/LRSC/
  • Southeastern Minnesota Water Resources Center (WRC):  The WRC, housed in the Geoscience Department, is dedicated to scientific inquiry into the natural and hydrological resources of the southeastern Minnesota region and strives to educate and inform students, citizens, and public agencies of the region about our natural resources through the development of partnerships and research. http://www.winona.edu/geology/2626.htm
  • Southeast Minnesota Infectious Disease Research Center (SMIDRC):  Information and web link under construction.

Winona State University's Center for Mississippi River Studies (CMRS) is dedicated to creating greater understanding of the broad multi-faceted nature of the Mississippi River and the people and places it touches. http://elearning.winona.edu/projects/CMRS/

The University has established an interdisciplinary Center for Engaged Research, Teaching and Scholarship (CERTS) which is responsible for articulating and implementing engaged teaching, research and scholarship activities on the Winona and Rochester campuses. http://www.winona.edu/21stcentury/innovation/L21Innitiatives/CERTS.html
