"As we prepare to celebrate our Sesquicentennial, the College of Education is reflecting on who we are, what we have learned over the last 150 years and where we want to be in the future.  Our strong programs build on our rich history as the first Normal School west of the Mississippi while preparing our graduates to address the needs of contemporary society.  Our faculty, staff, and students are a vital part of Winona State’s ‘community of learners dedicated to improving our world.’  As varied as our programs might be, they all reflect our dedication to improving our world by focusing on strengthening families, schools, and communities."

Welcome to the website of the College of Education at Winona State University.  On behalf of our faculty, staff, and current students, I extend a warm welcome and an invitation to explore our web pages where you will find information about our programs, our faculty, and our community partners.

The college is comprised of five departments: Counselor Education, Education, Educational Leadership, Physical Education and Recreation, and Special Education as well as the Maxwell Children’s Center.  We offer degree programs at the baccalaureate, post-baccalaureate, master, and specialist levels.  Degrees, certificates or licenses are offered in more than 25 different specializations.

All college programs are firmly grounded in the liberal arts and sciences.  Initial licensure and advanced programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Minnesota Department of Education and meet all standards established by professional education organizations.  Counselor Education concentrations are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and are recognized for state licensure in both school and community counseling.  Educational Leadership is accredited by the Minnesota Board of School Administrators (BOSA).  Maxwell Children’s Center is accredited by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

During your course of study you will work with dynamic faculty and staff who will encourage, support, and challenge you to be the very best you can be – to develop a strong knowledge base and become an ethical, reflective practitioner of your discipline.   Our departments and our college are committed to reach beyond the institution to provide the means to use fully classroom and out-of-classroom experiences that will make a difference in the lives of our faculty, staff and students and in responsibilities we are willing to assume as citizens.

I look forward to welcoming you to our university campus and to our College of Education.

Sally Standiford
