LOOKING FOR A MAJOR?

  CAREER ADVICE?

 LET US HELP!

1. DISCOVER

The Discover program is an online database full of resources regarding occupations, majors, job searches, and schools.  It offers three inventories – interests, abilities, and values – that help you figure out what careers might fit you and then links you to sites where you can learn more about them.  Once you come to the Counseling Center and get a user ID and password, you can access the site from any computer and all of your information is saved automatically every time you use it.  All the information is up-to-date and accurate and the user-friendly site will help guide you through your years of college and job-searching.  If you have already taken the test in the Counseling Center and received your token, you can access your Discover data from https://actapps.act.org/eDISCOVER/

2. Strong Interest Inventory

Another online program, the Strong Inventory evaluates your interests and then gives you a list of suggested careers.  After taking the Strong (usually about 35 minutes) in the Counseling Center, your results will be sent to a counselor who will print out your personalized report (14 pages worth!) and discuss it with you.  Generally, this means having two appointments, one to take the inventory and one to meet and discuss.  The report pinpoints your strengths, interests, and jobs, majors, and clubs that you might enjoy.  It is usually accurate and helps you understand yourself better

3. Print Materials

If you’re more of a by-the-book type, we’ve got resources for you too.  Besides having course catalogs from a number of colleges in the Midwest, we have the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Dictionary of Occupational Titles, books about careers in specific majors, and the Chronicle Four-year College Databook, along with a number of other career-planning books

4. Counseling Appointment

If, after all the research, you're still confused, you can schedule an appointment with a counselor to discuss your options. To make an appointment come to the Counseling Center office (132 Gildemeister) and we'll get you set up. Any questions or concerns, call 457-5330.Grief-Different Kinds www.utexas.edu/student/cmhc/booklets/Grief/grief.html
