11.  Please use the reverse side to provide any additional comments regarding your experience with and/or knowledge of the Winona State University Counselor Education Department and its graduates?

RESPONSES:

Having been a student and supervising a student, there is a wide degree of competency.  I know there were some opportunities to practice skills built into most classes.  However, I strongly believe students who had related jobs and life experience are/were overall better prepared.  I have continued friendships with many of my peers (other students) and have made many more friends in the field. We really do feel those of us who could use the skills as we developed them held a great advantage over those who could not use skills until practicum. So the long and short of this: students need more opportunities on a regular basis to use skills. That could be through part-time jobs in settings such as day care, paraprofessional etc. versus someone working in a retail store. I would love to see this become part of the program requirements. My intern had very little real life experience and it really showed.

I was extremely pleased with both the academic and clinical aspects of WSU's CE program. I did find, however, that I was lacking in treatment planning and case management skills upon graduation. Though these areas were covered in Diagnosis and Treatment, I did not feel proficient or confident in my skills upon graduation. Adding another course specifically to community counseling is a suggestion I'd offer. Additional AODA offerings would also benefit students entering the workplace. Having an intern was a rewarding/growth experience for myself and hopefully for my intern as well. I felt very supported by the WSU Site Coordinator I worked with.

Very happy and impressed thus far.

FYI, UW-Stout graduates are extremely well prepared students.

More emphasis on psychopathology and differential diagnosis separated by adults versus children would make it excellent.

I have been very pleased with the students I have supervised.  They have been very prepared and a positive addition.  They have also been very helpful with data collection and accountable.
