Program Advising

CE Advising Overview

Once an applicant has successfully completed screening and been admitted to the Counselor Education Department, the Counselor Education Department will assign the student an faculty advisor.  The assigned faculty advisor will serve in an advisory capacity throughout the student’s program of study unless the student requests a change of advisor in writing.  All change in advisor requests must be submitted to the following individuals: 1) Betty Singer, Administrative Assistant; 2) the currently assigned faculty advisor, and 3) the faculty person the student wishes to have assigned as their new advisor.

Newly admitted students (admitted after successfully screening into the department) are to contact their advisor upon receipt of their letter of acceptance from the Counselor Education Department.  The faculty advisor will work with the student to complete a program of study (Application for Admission to Candidacy Form) during CE 601 – Foundations of Counseling.  Information related to the student’s program of study, sequencing of courses, scheduling, practicum, internship, and other pertinent information related to the Counselor Education Department will be made available to the student by their faculty advisor throughout the student’s program of study.  The faculty advisor will also aid the student during the planning and development of the student’s Capstone Writing Project.  Students should consult with their advisor early in their program regarding their Capstone Writing Project.

Each academic semester, Counselor Education Department faculty will establish and maintain ten (10) regularly scheduled office hours per week for student advising.  Students may contact individual faculty or the Counselor Education Department Administrative Assistant in Winona or Rochester for individual faculty office hours.
