The purpose of the Academic Progression Reporting System (APRS) is designed to identify those students who are having academic difficulty at any point in their four years at Winona State University. By identifying these students, we have the staff of the Office of Inclusion & Diversity, Student Support Services, and the Athletic Department can address their needs, thereby increasing the likelihood of their success. The primary goal of this program is to assist faculty and staff in improving the motivation and performance of underachieving students in an effort to better WSU’s retention of these students. There are often good causes for poor academic performance including problems with family, financial aid, work, health, as well as difficulty with the transition from high school to college for freshman. Faculty, through regular contact with students, are the first to see the results of these problems which manifest themselves through low test and quiz scores, failure to turn in assignments, poor class attendance, and poor class participation. Faculty members often do not have the time to get to the root of each student’s problem. We hope that you feel it is important that faculty take time to identify mid-semester grades of students in an effort to retain students at WSU. Intervention strategies will entail that the three aforementioned offices contact and meet with the student on an individual basis and help him or her seek solutions to their problems which may include: tutorial services, additional lab or library assistance, counseling sessions, study groups, and or skills workshops. |
