  In Brief
The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree
Before there was Winona State University, there was the city of Winona. The city turned 150 years old on Oct. 15, 2001, and WSU joined with several other Winona businesses to mark the sesquicentennial.
Winona State University partnered with the Winona Daily News, Wells Fargo Bank, and Watkins Incorporated to put on a year long series of events honoring Winona's history while looking toward the future. These Winona Sesquicentennial Partners, nicknamed "The Four W's," have nearly 570 years of combined history in the city, and help culminate the sesquicentennial with a city birthday party Oct. 15. Hundreds of people came to Winona's Lake Park for good food, birthday cake, music, balloons, fireworks, and the first-ever, joint performance of the city's school marching bands.
"Winona State University may not have been created if it were not for the foresight shown by Winona's earliest citizens. Those people raised $7,000 and were granted the opportunity to be the home for the first teacher training institution west of the Mississippi," said WSU President Darrell Krueger. "We at Winona State University will always be grateful to the people of the City of Winona for what they have done and continue to do for the university. One small way to say 'thank you' was to be deeply involved in the city's sesquicentennial to celebrate this wonderful city and this important milestone."
The city's sesquicentennial is good practice for Winona State University. The university's sesquicentennial is coming up in 2008 and a committee has already starting working on plans for that celebration.
