WELCOME!

If you are a post baccalaureate student from another four year institution, know that "post-bacc" students make up a good percentage of the student population in the education programs at Winona State. The faculty and staff work hard to make the transition process go as smoothly as possible for those students joining us with initial college experiences in other programs.

Questions Next Steps
I have a current teaching license: from another state or I want to add-on to my current MN Teaching license.

Candidates who already hold a valid teaching license, but who wish to gain MN licensing requirements or to add a new license area must:

  1. Be admitted through the Winona State University Admissions Office www.winona.edu/admissions or Graduate Studies Office http://www.winona.edu/graduatestudy/
  2. Such students will typically speak with the Education Department Chair mreap@winona.edu or the WSU Certification Officer pomalley@winona.edu
I have completed my B.A. or B.S. Degree and now desire to get a teaching license.

Individuals who have completed a B.A. or B.S. Degree and who wish to return to complete needed coursework for MN licensing.

  1. Candidates can apply to Winona State University through the Admissions Office www.winona.edu/admissions.
  2. Generally, it takes about 2 ½ years to add-on to a non-teaching Bachelor’s degree to obtain a teaching license.  This is through the traditional program offered on the WSU Winona Campus.  Most of the required licensure courses are provided at the undergraduate level.
  3. Candidates will receive a Degree Audit Report when they are accepted to Winona State University to verify the courses needed for a specific teacher education licensure program.
  4. Students must be admitted into the teacher education unit to register for courses in the Professional Education Sequence; however students can take other required courses upon admission to Winona State University.
  5. Refer to the online course catalog for admission requirements and a list of teacher education licensure programs offered at WSU www.winona.edu/coursecatalog select "E" for the Education Dept.

A list of professional education sequence of courses offered through WSU can be found on the Teacher Licensure Page of this site.

Can I obtain licensure course work through a Master's Degree?

The only Master’s Degree Teacher licensure program offered through the Winona WSU Campus is in Special Education; however, a Teacher Licensure Collaboration program is offered through the Rochester campus which is a 14 month program that can be completed at a Master’s level.  To be eligible for this program you must have a Bachelor’s degree in the "content area" of the teacher education license you are applying for and this program is only for Secondary Teaching License grade 5-12For more information about this option please contact Jan Sherman jsherman@winona.edu or phaack@winona.edu

Please refer to our on-line graduate catalog for more information about our Master’s Degree programs. www.winona.edu/graduatestudy
