Teacher Preparation Courses

All students being recommended for licensing by WSU must complete the core teacher preparation courses at WSU regardless of the level of licensing, or the area of licensing. This sequence of courses is known as the "Professional Education Sequence."

Professional Education Requirement All students being recommended for licensing by WSU must complete the core teacher preparation courses at WSU regardless of the level of licensing, or the area of licensing. This sequence of courses is known as the "Professional Education Sequence." After admission to the university, students must apply and be accepted into the WSU Teacher Education program.

The semester immediately following acceptance into the program, students take two courses:

  • Human Development and Learning
  • Instructional Planning and Assessment

In addition to the above two courses, the sequence for
Secondary and K-12 students includes:
EDUC 308 Human Relations
EDUC 429 Secondary Reading and Teaching Strategies
EDUC 449 Middle School Philosophy and Organization
EDUC 459 Professional Educator (taken just prior to Student Teaching)

In addition to the above two courses, the sequence for
K-6 Middle School Specialty students includes:
EDUC 308 Human Relations
EDUC 449 Middle School Philosophy and Organization
EDUC 459 Professional Educator (taken just prior to Student Teaching)

In addition to the above two courses, the sequence for
Elementary with Early Childhood (ELEC) Pre-primary - grade 6
students includes:
EDUC 308 Human Relations
EDUC 410 Foundations of Early Childhood
EDUC 459 Professional Educator (taken just prior to Student Teaching)

Early Childhood Birth to age 3 ELEC students includes:
EDUC 308 Human Relations
EDUC 410 Foundations of Early Childhood
EDUC 413 Development in Infancy
EDUC 416 Early Childhood Education I
EDUC 424 Organization & Admin. of Early Childhood Programs
EDUC 459 Professional Educator (taken just prior to Student Teaching)
