"The
SE Metro Learning Community provided me the opportunity to discuss
ideas and collaborate with other teachers. I was exposed to new
information, prints of view, research about how students learn,
and different teaching techniques/approaches. I have always been
willing to try new things and refine lessons. However, in the two
years [I was involved with the Learning Community] my teaching was
affected at an accelerated pace. The changes have included the following:
- I
have increased parent communication.
- I
have shifted from a traditional classroom relying heavily on the
textbook to a constructivist classroom which emphasized concepts
and encouraged students' questions and points of view.
- I
view students as thinkers.
- I
consistently reflect on lessons.
- I
enlist colleagues knowledge/expertise and share my own.
- I
use rubrics and alternative assessments.
Madeline
Hunter (1987) stated:
"If
you want to feel secure, do what you already know how to do. If
you want to be a true professional and continue to grow, go to the
cutting edge of your competence, which will mean a temporary loss
of security. So, whenever you don't quite know what you're doing,
know you are growing." |
