The Winona State University’s
Master Teacher Program changed the way I teach and the way I learn.
I was not a self-directed learner before I started this program.
In the past I took classes, learned what was expected, wrote papers,
took tests, and ultimately applied little of the class content to
my teaching. What I loved about this program is that I was able
to make decisions about my own learning. My facilitators inspired
me to research subjects that I wanted to know more about based on
my professional interests and my students’ needs.
I also appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues.
A teacher’s best resources are other teachers. I can’t
measure the knowledge I gained from talking with other elementary
teachers with similar experiences and hearing the perspectives of
teachers from all other disciplines as well. The conversations we
had were so rich with knowledge and experience. There is nothing
else like it!
I became a more thoughtful, reflective teacher. I learned to develop
a system for recording my observations and reflections that worked
well for me. As a result, I was able to better analyze my students’
learning and then make changes to my instruction.
The most convincing indication that this program significantly impacted
my teaching is that I’m still striving to improve my practice
using action research, collaboration, and reflection. Completing
the program gave me the confidence, skills, and motivation to earn
National Board Certification. The students in my classroom continue
to benefit from my experience in the Winona State Master Teacher
Program. |
