Areas of Specialization
General Leadership
The General Leadership emphasis is designed for individuals who wish to prepare for leadership in educational settings outside of K-12 education. Students who choose this option can prepare for leadership careers in technical or community colleges, recreational science, 4-year colleges, or non-profit organizations. An individualized program of study can be tailored to meet the general requirements of leadership. (see course requirements)Teacher Leadership
The Teacher Leadership emphasis is designed for individuals who wish to develop their leadership ability for use in the classroom or in such expanded roles as lead teacher, team leader, curriculum developer, department chairperson, new teacher mentor, special project leader, administrative assistant, or dean of students. Professionals who enter this program are the leaders and future leaders of our schools. They come to this program from positions as teachers, school and district staff, and from positions in other state and private organizations committed to improving education and are distinguished from other educators, in part, by their willingness to take a more active role in the decision-making processes that occur at their schools. You must earn a minimum of thirty-three (33) graduate semester credits approved by your advisor. According to the requirements below, you will complete a minimum of 19 required semester credits and 14 elective credits. (see course requirements)K-12 Principalship (Non-licensure except in Iowa)
The M.S. degree provides a program of study that leads to licensure as a principal or assistant principal, except in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In these states, a Specialist degree (Ed.S.) or equivalent (M.S. + 30 credits) is required for full administrative licensure. Sports Management (Also results in a Certificate of competence)
The Outdoor Education/Adventure Based Leadership certificate of specialization program is designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles in outdoor/adventure settings. Students who choose this option can prepare for leadership careers in outdoor/adventure recreation in campus recreation, National Outdoor Leadership School, Outward Bounds, and as entrepreneurs in the outdoor recreation industry. An individualized program can be created through the advisor to best meet the professional needs of the students. The 18 credit certificate of speciaization can be taken independently, if you already hold a Master's degree, or as the specialized component of our Master's in Educational Leadership. Our graduate program in Sports Management is designed to prepare students for leadership opportunities in an exciting and competitive sports industry. Students will develop expertise in facility management, sports marketing, finance and sports law and ethics. The 18 credit certificate of speciaization is an entirely online program and can be taken independently or as the specialized component of our Master's in Educational Leadership. Writing Requirement (choose one)
Without Thesis:
Candidates must write a comprehensive research paper substantively related to educational leadership to show proficiency in research and writing at the graduate level.With Thesis:
Candidate must write a thesis for (6) credits demonstrating ability to use scientific methods and procedures in the solution of an independent study project in the area of educational leadership. The six (6) credits will be applied to administration course requirements in major field courses.
Examinations
Each candidate must pass a comprehensive written examination on course work. If the thesis option is chosen, the candidate will also be required to pass an oral examination on the thesis.
