Planning for Graduation

Listed are the tasks necessary in order for students to receive their degrees in Leadership Education or Education Leadership.

Admission to Graduate Studies

Before an applicant can be considered for admission into a Winona State University Leadership Education or Education Leadership program, they must first apply for admission to WSU's Graduate Studies. Follow the steps on How to Apply to ensure a smooth application process.

Admission to the Leadership Education Department

The Graduate Office will forward your application folder to the department after transcripts are received. The department graduate admissions committee will meet to consider your application to enter a degree program, then assign you an advisor.

Completion of Application to Candidacy

You will be asked to meet with your assigned advisor to fill out the Application to Candidacy. This must be done before earning 16 graduate credits in the program.

Successful Completion of Coursework

Follow your Candidacy Form and complete all courses listed. A course schedule for the next two years is available so that you can outline when you plan to take each course.

Capstone or Master's Thesis

EL 618 Scholarship helps you design and begin writing your research paper. A research paper must be written and approved before a degree will be granted.

Oral Comprehensive Examination

Apply to take the comprehensive examination during the last term of your program. The Department Calendar lists dates and times of the upcoming comprehensive exams.

Application to Graduate

Apply to graduate during the first week of the last term of coursework. Order a transcript and compare it with your Candidacy form to make sure you have completed the required coursework.

Completion of Application to Candidacy

Successful Completion of Field Study

You will take EL 789, Writing Seminar: EdS Field Study to design and begin writing your field study. You must write and bind 3 copies of a Field Study before being awarded an Educational Specialist Degree.

Oral Defense & Oral Comprehensive Examination

An oral comprehensive examination will include a defense of your Field Study and your knowledge of coursework completed. The Department Calendar lists dates and times of the upcoming comprehensive exams.

Bound Field Study (3 Copies)

Three bound copies of your final version of the Field Study are to be distributed; one to the WSU library, one to the department, and one to keep in your files. More copies can be bound at your discretion.
