Course Description
The ELC offers core courses, electives, and lab/tutorials at three levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Core courses are required of all students, and electives are recommended based on students’ needs and preferences. Lab hours are required for all students, but students may sign up for additional open labs and tutorials. Level one courses (01 level) are designed for beginning ESL students, level two courses (02 level) for intermediate ESL students, and level three courses (03 level) for advanced ESL students.

Core Courses Descriptions
ELC 011, Beginning Speaking: Getting Ready to Speak
This course is designed to help students in vocabulary, sentence structures and pronunciation so that students can speak in simple sentences and dialogues. Special attention will be paid to students’ pronunciation and understanding of basic sentences.
ELC 012, Beginning Listening: Listening for real life
This course assists students with needs in basic listening skills in order to interact with others in an English-speaking environment. Students will be listening to various life-related topics and learn how to recognize different sounds in English and practice their pronunciation.
ELC 013, Beginning Reading and Writing: Start Reading and Writing
This course helps students read and understand connected prose in a variety of everyday formats and write sentences and paragraphs in response to the reading. Emphasis will be on vocabulary building and sentence making.
ELC 014, Beginning integrated skills
This course integrates all skills at the beginning level. The course will be designed according to students’ particular needs.
ELC 021, Intermediate Speaking: Speak Interpersonally
This course emphasizes speaking interpersonally. Students will read and talk about personal experiences and stories and write in response to these stories. The course will provide opportunities for students to practice speaking with the help of targeted reading and vocabulary. It will continue the work in pronunciation and sentence structures so that students will become more accurate as well as fluent in their use of the English language.
ELC 022, Intermediate Listening: Interactive Listening
This course focuses on a variety of listening comprehension skills and strategies in order for students to become more effective listeners in a variety of English settings. The course offers students opportunities to develop skills necessary for analyzing and synthesizing the information provided through listening in class, class discussion, and outside sources.
ELC 023, Intermediate Reading and Writing: Reading and Writing Stories
This course focuses on getting meaning by reading connected stories and writing stories and/or in response to stories. Special attention will be on sentence connections to make stories and on accuracy and fluency in reading and writing.
ELC 024, Intermediate integrated skills
This course integrates all skills at the intemediate level. The course will be designed according to students’ particular needs.
ELC 031, Advanced Speaking: Advanced Oral Communication
This course prepares students for sustained conversation in formal and informal situations. Students learn how to deliver oral presentations, to hold debates, and to carry on day-to-day conversations. This course focuses on speaking and listening skills while incorporating reading and writing skills.
ELC 032, Advanced Listening: Listening Academic English
This course prepares students to understand academic lectures, reports, and dialogues and class discussions. It introduces students to a variety of academic speech patterns in preparation for their undergraduate work. The course will incorporate reading and speaking skills.
ELC 033, Advanced Reading and Writing: Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes
This course helps students understand a variety of authentic, meaningful, and stimulating academic readings from college textbooks. It helps develop students’ critical reading strategies such as skimming and scanning, making inferences, making predictions, finding key ideas, etc. This course also helps students write short academic papers, journals, and reports.

This course integrates all skills at the advanced level. The course will be designed according to students’ particular needs.
Electives
Electives are designated 04 level courses, and they are offered only selectively each given session. Although electives are open to all students, students should be aware that they are somewhat challenging to beginners.
