Program Courses

The following is a list of all the possible courses offered during a given semester at the ELC.  Course offerings change from semester to semester depending on student enrollment and the language needs of the students.

Pre-level Courses

ELC 001         Working on Speaking

This course develops fundamental speaking skills.  Students practice pronunciation, interpersonal conversation, and formal presentations.  Grade only.

ELC 002         Preparing for Listening 

This course develops fundamental listening skills.  Students receive intensive listening practice comprehending basic oral texts and speaking situations.  Grade only.

ELC 003         Improving Reading

This course develops fundamental reading skills.  Students study a variety of basic readings in order to develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension.  Grade only.

ELC 004         Building Basic Integrated Skills

This course integrates all communicative skills.  Students with basic English proficiency examine a range of texts and complete projects to improve their language proficiency.  Grade only.

ELC 005         Developing Writing

This course develops fundamental writing skills.  Students receive intensive practice writing complete sentences and basic paragraphs.  Grade only.

ELC 007         English Language Mechanics

This course introduces the mechanics of the English language.  Students develop their grammar knowledge and ability to apply the concepts for communicative purposes.  Grade only.

Level One Courses

ELC 011         Getting Ready to Speak

This course develops beginning speaking skills.  Students practice pronunciation, interpersonal conversation, and formal presentations.  Grade only

ELC 012         Listening for Real Life

This course develops beginning listening skills.  Students receive intensive listening practice comprehending common oral texts and speaking situations.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 002.  Grade only

ELC 013         Start Reading and Writing

This course develops beginning reading skills.  Students study a variety of common readings in order to develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 003.   Grade only.   

ELC 014         Beginning Integrated Skills

This course integrates all communicative skills.  Students with beginning English proficiency examine a range of texts and complete projects to improve their language proficiency.  Prerequisite:  qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 004.   Grade only.   

ELC 015         Beginning Academic Reading and Writing

This course develops beginning writing skills.  Students receive intensive practice writing paragraphs and basic essays. Prerequisite:  qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 015.  Grade only.

ELC 016         American Language and Culture

This course employs task-based instruction and assessments.  Students refine their English proficiency, acculturation to American culture, and learning autonomy.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam. Grade only. 

ELC 017         English Grammar I

This course covers beginning level grammar concepts.  Students develop their grammar knowledge and ability to apply the concepts for communicative purposes.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 007.  Grade only. 

Level Two Courses 

ELC 021         Speak Interpersonally

This course refines intermediate speaking abilities.  Students practice pronunciation, interpersonal conversation, and formal presentations.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 011.  Grade only

ELC 022         Interactive Listening

This course develops intermediate listening skills.  Students intensive listening practice comprehending complex oral texts and speaking situations.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 012.  Grade only

ELC 023         Reading and Writing Stories

This course develops intermediate reading skills.  Students study a variety of academic readings in order to develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 013.   Grade only.   

ELC 024         Intermediate Integrated Skills

This course integrates all communicative skills.  Students with intermediate English proficiency will examine a range of texts and complete projects to improve their language proficiency. Prerequisite:  qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 014.   Grade only.   

ELC 025         Intermediate Academic Reading and Writing

This course develops intermediate writing skills.  Students receive intensive practice writing essays and employing academic writing conventions. Prerequisite:  qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 015.  Grade only.

ELC 026         Intermediate Task-based Language Instruction

This course employs intermediate task-based instruction and assessments.  Students refine their English proficiency, acculturation to American culture, and learning autonomy.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 016.  Grade only.

ELC 027         English Grammar II

This course covers intermediate level grammar concepts.  Students develop their grammar knowledge and ability to apply the concepts for communicative purposes.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 017.  Grade only. 

Level Three Courses

ELC 031         Advanced Oral Communication

This course refines advanced speaking abilities.  Students practice pronunciation, interpersonal conversation, and formal presentations.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 021.  Grade only

ELC 032         Interactive Listening

This course develops advanced listening skills.  Students intensive listening practice comprehending complex oral texts and speaking situations.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 022.  Grade only

ELC 033         Advanced Reading and Writing Stories

This course develops advanced reading skills.  Students study a variety of advanced academic readings in order to develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 013.   Grade only.

ELC 034         Advanced Integrated Skills

ELC 035         Advanced Academic Reading and Writing

This course develops advanced writing skills.  Students receive intensive practice refining their ability to write essays and employ academic writing conventions.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 025.  Grade only.

ELC 036         Advanced Task-based Language Instruction

This course employs advanced task-based instruction and assessments.  Students refine their English proficiency, acculturation to American culture, and learning autonomy.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 016.  Grade only.

ELC 037         English Grammar III

This course covers advanced level grammar concepts.  Students develop their grammar knowledge and ability to apply the concepts for communicative purposes.  Prerequisite: qualifying score on ELC placement exam or ELC 027.  Grade only.
