On-Demand Public Speaking Student Speech Review Tool

eLearning Lead: John Stafford     Faculty-Staff Lead: Luke LeFebvre*

Started: January, 2007     Completed: March, 2007

Description: Luke LeFebvre (Communication Studies) wanted to publish his Public Speaking student presentations online for secure, easy, and on-demand access. He had been video-taping the presentations and buring them to DVD, a costly and time consuming process.

Using a network "class store" directory established by Information Technology Services that restricted access to Luke's students, a $29 copy of Apple’s QuickTime Pro movie player loaded to Luke's laptop, and a simple procedure developed by eLearning's John Stafford, Luke was able to point the video camera connected to his laptop at the presentation area, press a button to start recording and again to stop, and then drag the resulting movie to the individual student's class store folder where it was available immediately for review. Almost no extra time was added to the class period and work flowed uninterrupted. Luke's students evaluated the process and Luke and John presented the method and preliminary results at the New Media Consortium Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video in March, 2007.
