What's New? Turnitin Plagiarism Prevention

In June, 2008, WSU eLearning purchased a campus license for iParadims' Turnitin plagiarism prevention service to support a pilot project during the 2008-2009 academic year. Turnitin is a popular application in higher education that allows instructors to check student papers against millions of other documents in the Turnitin database and on the Web to detect the improper use of original material.

How Instructors Use Turnitin

Turnitin is most commonly used as one component of a comprehensive approach to educating students in the appropriate use of others' original and copyrighted materials. Many students accused of plagiarism report being unaware that they were using others' work improperly. The Originality Report generated when students submit papers to Turnitin can be used to help students identify problems and improve their writing.

The Pilot Project

This year, WSU will be pilot testing the Turnitin service, gathering feedback from instructors and students at every point along the way. At the end of the year, the university will decide whether to continue or discontinue the service. eLearning will assist faculty interested in participating in the pilot.
