The
Distinguished Student Award is presented, as are the following awards,
at the academic year’s final department meeting. The Distinguished Student Award is presented only to the
student whose achievement is truly outstanding, demonstrating considerable
potential for further accomplishment in the field of English language and
literature. The Distinguished
Student’s name is engraved on a plaque displayed in the English office.
Traditionally, this achievement has also been noted with a cash award.
The
Bremer Award is presented in honor of Sylvie S. Bremer.
The department awards $100 to a creative writer of exceptional promise
and/or accomplishment each spring.
Established
by former state university system chancellor Robert Carothers, the Carothers
Award is given to an outstanding student in the field of creative
writing at each of the state’s universities.
The Distinguished
Graduation Portfolio in English Award is presented by the department’s
Assessment Committee to any graduating student whose capstone portfolio is
judged to be truly distinguished in its presentation and accomplishments.
In honor of
Professor Emerita Sandra Adickes, who sponsored a contest and award for
first-year English composition from 1988-1997, the Adickes Award
is presented to the student whose essay in a section of English 111 is deemed
most outstanding. The Writing
Center sponsors and conducts the contest, publishing the best essays in an
edition of The Writing Labyrinth.
