New Faculty Guide: Internships, Arranged Classes, and Independent Studies

A limited number of continuing internships (English 399) are available for qualified students in teaching, tutoring, writing, publishing, and editing each semester.  Students may register for variable credits (1-15) as approved by the supervising faculty member.  Internship applications require a bibliography, a description of the activities involved, and a plan for assessment; applications are subject to the approval of the department chairperson and college dean well in advance of the semester of enrollment.

An arranged class—an existing course taught as a tutorial—may be offered by a faculty member under unusual or extreme circumstances.  An arranged class may not be offered in the same term as a regularly scheduled section of the same course.  An arranged class implies regular student-faculty meetings, and requires the same quantity and quality of student work as a regularly scheduled course. Arranged course applications require a bibliography, a description of the activities involved, and a plan for assessment; applications are subject to the approval of the department chairperson and college dean well in advance of the semester of enrollment.

Individual students may propose courses of independent study for up to four semester credit hours under the supervision of a faculty member.  The topic of study must warrant the 400-level designation and must not be one normally available in the regularly scheduled offering of courses.  Independent study applications require a bibliography, a description of the activities involved, and a plan for assessment; applications are subject to the approval of the department chairperson and college dean well in advance of the semester of enrollment.
