University
Studies is WSU’s general education program, and the Department of English
makes considerable contributions to the program at a number of levels. The English department provides approximately thirty sections
of the Basic Skills Reading and Writing requirement each term, as well as
offerings designated in the Arts & Sciences Core as Humanities courses (120,
Introduction to Literature, and H140, Approaches to Film) and as Fine and
Performing Arts courses (222, Introduction to Creative Writing).
In the Unity and Diversity category, the English Department offers
courses under the headings of Critical Analysis (210, Advanced Expository
Writing); Contemporary Citizenship (211, Writing in Communities); and
Multicultural Perspectives (220, Multicultural American Literatures; 221, Topics
in World Literature, and 432, Comparative Literature).
Furthermore, English 290, Literary Studies, is offered as a Critical
Analysis Flag Course; a number of 300-level courses are designated as Oral
Communication Flags; and a number of 400-level courses are designated as Writing
Flags.
