Doug was born on the prairie and raised in the Rocky Mountain foothills of the province of Alberta, Canada. He attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, receiving the BA (Hons.) 1st Class and MA degrees in English before moving on to do a PhD in English at the University of Toronto. He specializes in Medieval and Tudor drama and intellectual culture, and his research has appeared in Comparative Drama and The Medieval Review in addition to presentations at several international conferences. His book, Rhetorical Subversion in Early English Drama, was recently published by Peter Lang Publishing.
