Relevant Policies and Practices for English 111

  1. Course enrollment is capped by the department at 25.  No individual instructor may “blue card” (over-enroll) a student into English 111.  Refer individual requests to the Chairperson.

  2. Individual instructors may cancel a class session in lieu of individual conferences, library research, or small-group work.

  3. Individual instructors are the final arbiter of student work.  Student complaints about course or paper grades must be appealed first to the course instructor, within ten days of the start of the subsequent academic term; only afterwards can an official appeal process begin.

  4. Individual instructors are empowered and encouraged to make use of whatever readings, pedagogies, materials, and practices best suit their (and their students’) needs, insofar as their choices demonstrably support the outcomes listed above under the general course description.

A Fall 1999 survey of English 111 instructors suggests the following:

University Academic Integrity Policy

Academic integrity at Winona State University is based on honesty. The University community requires that work produced by students represents their personal efforts and requires that they properly acknowledge the intellectual contributions of others.

WSU students are required to adhere to the University’s standards of academic integrity. Cheating, deception, misrepresentation, fabrication, and plagiarism are types of behavior that are unacceptable and will be viewed as violations of the academic integrity policy.  Academic sanctions may be imposed as deemed appropriate by the faculty member, although students may appeal the sanction.
