Declaring the Major/Minor

•  When students have decided on the English major or minor, they should fill out and submit the Major Declaration Form [They should go to the English Department office to get the form signed and get an advisor assigned to them.]

•  Students' academic advisor is a key figure in their academic experience: Students should get to know their advisors and consult with them on program planning and general academic concerns.

Transfer Students:

•  The Admissions Office does the transcript evaluation; the transfer officer determines the equivalencies for University Studies requirements. Results will be entered into the student's DARS form.

•  The English Department does the equivalency evaluation for all other English courses.

•  Transfer students should make an appointment with the chair of the English Department to determine the transfer of English courses from other institutions-transfer students should bring their Transfer Evaluation form (from the admissions office), DARS form, course syllabi for courses they want evaluated, course catalog from the other institution, student copies of transcripts (WSU and other institution), and Course Substitution forms.

Pre-Registration Advising Process

•  Sign-Up: Students should sign up for advising appointments with their advisors before the registration period begins. A sign-up sheet will be posted on advisors' office doors. Students should bring the following:

•  A student copy of their transcript

•  Their DARS form [DARS forms are available on the WSU website.]

•  Program Planning: In order to fulfill all graduation requirements, including those for the English major/minor in an efficient and meaningful way, it is important to make semester course selections with long-range plans in mind.

•  Semester Plan: In making semester course selections, students will want to consider the following:

•  Credit load [keep in mind that tuition banding allows students to take 12-18 credits for the one set tuition fee]:

•  Type of courses: Semester course load should include a variety with no more than one of each of the following types of courses: survey, language, and oral/writing "flag" course.

•  Sequencing : Remember that some courses have prerequisites (consult the information below). Generally, 300 level courses should be taken before 400 level courses. It is a good idea to take English 447 after you have had survey courses but before you take the undergraduate seminar.

•  Mini Courses : Use mini courses to fill in gaps in your program or to develop areas of expertise or strength.

•  Specialty Courses : English majors and minors (particularly the Literature and Language majors and minors) are encouraged to enroll in the following courses:

•  Undergraduate Seminar: English 470/471 (Oral Flag)

Fall Semester 2004: English 471-Shakespeare on Film

•  Critical Approaches to a Text: English 325 (3 cr)

Fall Semester 2004: English 325- Leaves of Grass

4. Prerequisites: All students need to complete English 290 before they take any of the upper division courses (with the exception of the mini-courses). [Consult information below for complete list of prerequisites]

5. Department Portfolio: Students should remember that they will have to complete the department portfolio before graduation. Students should take English 490 during their last semester-the portfolio is compiled at that time, but students should be considering the portfolio requirements throughout their program, gathering possible samples from various courses. Keep all papers and projects.
